Recently, I have been in the mood for a good book to curl up with, get trapped inside of, and take me away to another time. "A Kiss In Time" did the job. Alex Flinn penned so well, a modern retelling of "Sleeping Beauty". I would definitely recommend this book to others.
With that said ... there were a few flaws (in my opinion) that stopped this book from getting a top rating in my reading book list. Here's my thoughts on the novel:
I loved being able to read a book and not wanting to put it down. It's an easy read ... I finished the book in less than a day. I also love the fact that good values and happy endings do exist in books primarily written for teens. In today's world, that is not always easy to come by. "A Kiss In Time" is one of those books.
However, I felt like the characters could have been developed more. More description, at the beginning of the novel, could have helped me picture Jack better in my "picture viewing" thoughts. I know this is a minor complaint. Maybe Alex Flinn wanted to leave Jack to be the "Prince" of the readers imaginations. My main complaint is the unnecessary additions of over-drinking, and moral actions, of less important characters. As a mother, I can read those moments and chalk it up to poor life decisions on the part of teens. However, I am left with the dilemma of whether I should recommend it for my pre-teen to read. Consequences to poor choices were never pointed out and I don't want my daughter to think ... this is normal teenage life.
Overall, my complaints are few. Alex Flinn did a beautiful job, retelling a fairytale I grew up with. The twists and turns the story took were amusing and kept my interest. It definitely is a novel worth reading. You will love it!
Here's a description of what "A Kiss In Time" is about:
Talia fell under a spell. . . .
Jack broke the curse.
I was told to beware the accursed spindle, but it was so enchanting, so hypnotic. . . .
I was looking for a little adventure the day I ditched my tour group. But finding a comatose town, with a hot-looking chick asleep in it, was so not what I had in mind.
I awakened in the same place but in another time—to a stranger's soft kiss.
I couldn't help kissing her. Sometimes you just have to kiss someone. I didn't know this would happen.
Now I am in dire trouble because my father, the king, says I have brought ruin upon our country. I have no choice but to run away with this commoner!
Now I'm stuck with a bratty princess and a trunk full of her jewels. . . . The good news: My parents will freak!
